Spartan, 2018 - 2019, 90.9 cm x 121.92 cm, 35.75" x 48", urethane and acrylic binders, pigments in dispersal water, dry iridescent pigments and resin on panel.
Spartan has multiple paint layers that are suspended between layers of clear resin. The clear resin layers allow light to get behind translucent paint glazes that make the painting glow with an inner light. The suspended paint layers also create a 3 - D sense of depth as the viewer's point of view shifts.
Spartan is a native or inhabitant of ancient Sparta.
As in most of my paintings Spartan was titled after the painting was finished. This allows conceptual flexibility during the painting process.
A Spartan was an inhabitant of Sparta. Despite their reputation they were not any more successful than other ancient Greek armies. With giving this painting this title I'm poking at the weakness underlining toxic masculinity.
Spartan has a reflective surface.
